1. Back to the history
-
Trade Embargo: The trade embargo against Vietnam began during the war era in 1975 and lasted until President Clinton lifted it on February 3, 1994.
-
WTO Accession: Vietnam joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) on January 11, 2007, becoming the 150th member. The accession ceremony was held at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
- Timeframe: We have taken an average of 25 to 31 years (from 1993 to 2024) to establish private economic groups and for families to accumulate our own wealth.

2. The difference
In the past, students from well-off families could enhance their competitive edge by studying abroad in developed countries such as the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Today, the gap has narrowed thanks to:
- Social media: Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.
- Online channels: YouTube, podcasts, Google
- Artificial intelligence: AI, ChatGPT, and a range of other high-quality knowledge-sharing tools
- Key opinion leaders (KOLs), websites, and educational platforms
3. Educational programs lag behind practical applications:
Currently, the decision of which major to pursue in order to have a future direction for the next 10 years is a concern and worry for parents stemming from: Entrepreneurs and politicians.
Unlike the time of the open-door economy, when everyone had the same circumstances, asset accumulation depended on: Personal relationships, luck, ability, effort, courage, and wise decisions that led to the accumulation of capital assets for families in Vietnam.
Difficulty: The F1, F2 generation born into successful and wealthy families no longer has much will, motivation, and direction to strive with their parents to take over the family fortune in the face of a future with many new changes.
4. Barriers to family connection:
a) Generational language barriers
b) Barriers to understanding the reasons for the success of the previous generation
c) Barriers to understanding the reasons for the success of the current era
d) Pressure of asset inflation for families with high asset bases
e) The accumulation of love, recognition, psychology, beliefs, interests, listening, and positive emotional energy over 20-30 years shapes the personality and behavior of F1, F2
f) The difference between what is learned in Europe and America and the practices in Vietnam and localities
g) The constant change of social networks and artificial intelligence (AI)
The continuation of asset management and inheritance of the family’s and group’s system and empire building is slowed down by the above gaps.

5. Definition of resources:
a) Current asset position, experience, relationships in the industry supply chain.
b) Cross-ownership of shares in family companies.
Family relationships are not simply nominal siblings but are at a higher level than ordinary families, related to culture, family background, and family resource development planning.
c) People:
- What should children study to make their resumes look good: Career guidance in line with their personality, family status, aptitude, world trends, Vietnam trends, and personal passions.
- The shift in opportunities and challenges related to Vietnam’s geopolitics, the flow of foreign money into Vietnam (FDI).
- A good resume, understanding of local customs: Reduce the gap between applying knowledge learned in Europe and America to a local market with high customs and practices like Vietnam.
- Have clear achievements: Ability to raise capital, increase assets, total assets under management, exit capital or build a network to access liquidity for shares in family companies.
- Risk management in the process of optimizing business and core businesses/strengths built over 20+ years, related to the ability/confidence to accept valuations when investing/M&A/Asset management.
- Media risk and family image representation is controlled (related to stock price) or M&A activities.
- Media image in line with family status, not to be confused with New Money.
- Future family leaders can also become knowledge pieces for the extended family in the next 10-15 years: Finance, asset management, law, media or technology/Not focusing and dispersing learning/education resources separately from family/clan/family activities.
- The next generation is shortening the time to support the family in the context of the founding founder increasingly … wanting to rest/The cost of setting up a new business is much higher than inflation, and different actions are needed.
- For these families, family resource planning is strategic, continuous, and consistent.

6. Barriers, Difficulties, and Market Nature:
How to choose experts and mentors for your children to:
a) Understand local customs in Vietnam, where success in the economy comes only 30% from ability, with the remaining factors largely from relationships and luck.
b) Experience is important, but it cannot replace the systematic and disciplined approach to governance, operations, and asset management, and financial knowledge from the West.
This requires a standardized methodology from universities in developed countries.
c) A consulting team in positions equivalent to those of the grandparents and founders to speak the same language as the Chairman and founders – the founders so that F1, F2 can continue the success from the intelligence, courage, and wisdom of their parents and family.
